Do not add to or remove

The heavy iron doors of the scriptorium shut out the howling mountain wind, but they could not shut out the tension in the room.

Brother Malachi sat at the long oak table, his fingers trembling slightly as he held the quill. Before him lay the Codex, a massive, leather-bound volume of ancient law and prophecy that had survived centuries of ruin. Across the table stood Abbot Thomas, his face shadowed by the flickering light of a single tallow candle.

"The King demands a change," Thomas said, his voice a low, urgent whisper. "Just a minor adjustment to the edicts of the fourth chapter. A softening of the restrictions on land ownership. If we comply, the monastery will be granted gold enough to feed the village through the winter."
Malachi looked down at the vellum page. His eyes traced the stark, black ink of the ancient warnings written at the book's opening and closing.

"Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it..." — Deuteronomy 4:2
"If anyone adds to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away... God will take away from that person any share in the Tree of Life and in the Holy City..." — Revelation 22:18-19

"It is a trap, Father," Malachi whispered, his voice catching in his throat. "The text is sealed. We are mere guardians, not authors."

"The people are starving, Malachi!" Thomas pressed, leaning over the table, his palms slamming against the wood. "Does a God of mercy care more for ink on a dead skin than the lives of living children? Scratch out the verse. Just three lines. No one will know but us."
